It’s been a month since Kavya started day care, and she’s adjusted surprisingly well. In the beginning, she was so busy sizing up everyone and everything about the place, she wouldn’t so much as crack a smile.
The difference now is shocking.
She’s plays favorites a bit, lavishing snuggles and giggles on Ms. Sarah and having laugh-out-loud moments with Eduardo, her favorite teacher’s helper, but she’s comfortable with everyone now.
And she loves the freedom she gets at day care, where she’s got a wide-open …
TweetI feel like I’m always running behind.Kavi went to day care wearing mismatched socks this morning. They were both pink and white, which made me feel a little better. But the socks are a symptom of a greater problem.
We need a schedule.
Kavi’s been in day care for nearly three weeks now, which is roughly about the same amount of time I’ve been in grad school. We’ve got some semblance of an a.m. routine, but that’s about it.
I’ve been getting up with her at 5 or 6 or 7, depending on …
TweetSo Kavya started daycare this week. And we both survived. Well, sort of.
Of course, there were tears involved. But I have to admit, it was mostly me who was doing the crying.

Kavi is almost 7 months old, and I know it’s a bit early to expect her to be crawling. But it seems like she may get there sooner rather than later. She likes to hang out a bit on all fours and she tries to move around — but she ends up pushing herself backward instead of forward.
It’s all happening so fast. Almost too fast. I don’t even know where six months went. And before we know it, she’ll be a year old already.
It’s funny, …
So this is it. There’s one week left before my little Kavi, at all of seven months old, goes off to day care. And one week left before I put on my work clothes — or maybe some student version of them anyway — and head to grad school.
One week left of the cozy little world Kavi and I have built at home, cuddling in bed, trying new foods like mashed potato and mango and peas, playing on the floor with the Cookie Monster and Xylophone her …
TweetIf you’ve been following our day care dilemma, here’s the verdict: It’s a go. My 6-month-old is going to day care. And it’s making me sad.
I know parents send their kids off to day care much younger than 6 months old, but we were hoping it wouldn’t come to this.
I don’t know what fantasy land we were in when thought we were amongst the few dual-career couples who could get away without needing outside child care.
But I’m a work-at-home mom. Work-at-home meaning, in theory, that …
